Jeffress: My presence, prayer not an endorsement

Pastor Jeffress with Donald TrumpA well-known Southern Baptist pastor isn’t backing down after taking some heat for appearing on the campaign trail with Donald Trump.

OneNewsNow spoke with Dr. Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist-Dallas, after the Iowa caucuses and asked him about appearing with Trump at two in-state Christian colleges. Speaking at Dordt College on January 23, the pastor said: “Although as a pastor I cannot officially endorse a candidate, I would not be here this morning if I were not absolutely convinced that Donald Trump would make a great president of the United States.”

Jeffress is doubling down on that remark. “I don’t regret one thing I’ve done at all,” he tells OneNewsNow, “but I am not a part of the Trump campaign or any campaign.”

It’s not his job to pick sides, he explains. “In my role as a Fox News contributor, my job is to analyze why a large number of evangelicals were going for this very unorthodox candidate.”

Jeffress, Rev. Robert (FBC Dallas)But Jeffress is a very orthodox Christian pastor, and some wonder if he’s getting a little close to the controversial candidate, who they say might not reflect evangelical values.

“At two Christian colleges in Iowa, I was asked to pray for Mr. Trump and the campaign,” the pastor continues, “and I was able to speak about Jesus Christ who came and died and rose again that we might have eternal life. What pastor wouldn’t want to take advantage of that great opportunity?”

Asked if he’d do the same thing – if asked – for other GOP presidential hopefuls such as Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz, the pastor responded: “Well, early on I would have been happy to, but it was interesting. For the last five months, Donald Trump was the only one who asked me to pray at his events.”

  1. I do hope you are NOT endorsing Donald Trump. I believe, along with millions of others, that Donald Trump is the one whose christian values I would question. He is USING you, Mr Jeffers. I could not support your endorsement of Trump, or anyone who is not a tried and true Christian, shown by their history. Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio at least are professed christians, and their lives show it. Completely the contradictory show and tell version of christianity Donald Trump is presenting. So stand up for us Mr. Jeffers, or we will not stand up for you.
