IN THE PUBLIC ARENA
This week, Liberty Institute filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in support of Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties in their landmark religious freedom cases against Obama’s controversial HHS Mandate.
The case, Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. and Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. v. Sebelius, is scheduled for oral arguments on March 25. This is a critical, high profile case that will determine whether for profit, faith-based businesses are protected by the Religion Clauses of the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and can operate without fear of governmental control and oversight of their religious exercise. Read Liberty Institute’s brief here.
“For almost 200 years, corporations have been treated as persons able to assert rights under the Constitution and statutory law,” said Kelly Shackelford, President and CEO of the Liberty Institute. “The government should not be able to coerce faith-based organizations to violate their religious beliefs.”
The Supreme Court agreed to take up this appeal last November and will review whether faith-based businesses should be required to provide and pay for life-terminating drugs and devices against their religious beliefs.
DEFENDING FAITH-BASED BUSINESSES AND MINISTRIES In addition to filing the Supreme Court brief, Liberty Institute is actively involved in fighting back against the HHS Mandate on behalf of several clients, including Joe Holland Chevrolet and most recently, Hastings Automotive, Inc. and Hastings Chrysler Center.
In addition, Liberty is consulting with other businesses and ministries across the country and continues to receive calls from others who feel the pressure of the impending mandate.
The HHS Mandate is a massive intrusion into the personal healthcare decisions of U.S. citizens, and it continues to blatantly infringe upon Americans’ religious freedom. Liberty Institute stands ready to help businesses and organizations across the country fight back against this unconscionable mandate.
