Hammond’s split-second instinct was to reach for his weapon. Only the former U.S. Army specialist was no longer stationed in Mosul or Tal Afar, Iraq. He was at home, in Denver, and there was no threat — or gun. Instead, Hammond’s wife was sitting in the passenger seat, reminding him that they were safe.
