Tea Party blasts stopgap budget deal

From The Washington Examiner, by Susan Ferrichio,Washington may be breathing a sigh of relief now that Democrats and Republicans have cut a deal on a spending plan that will keep the federal government operating until after the election, but the Tea Party is accusing both sides of being gutless.

The Tea Party Patriots, one of the movement’s largest organizations, sent an angry note to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, blasting the deal because it sustains current spending levels through March without any additional cuts.

“Mr. Boehner and Mr. Reid, you might not have built our country but your lack of guts is destroying it,” Jenny Beth Martin, the group’s co-founder and national coordinator, said. “Just as in May when five budgets were proposed and voted down, the dysfunctional Congress, under your watch, has chosen again to punt on making the real spending cuts that Americans demand.”

Martin said the Tea Party will hold the leadership accountable in November “for it’s reckless, irresponsible behavior” on spending.

Congress has yet to pass a budget for the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. The deal struck Tuesday by Bohener and Reid would temporarily fund the government and avoid a shutdown until after the election. Details are still being worked out, however, and it’ll be September before the measure is up for approval.

“Harry Reid and John Boehner have done it again,” Martin lamented. “Cutting political deals to avoid a tough vote in an election year.”
