I wanted to bring something important to your attention that may potentially save your family thousands of dollars for your children’s education.

Nine years ago my father bought each of his grandchildren a Texas Tomorrow Fund grant. Since it’s beginning in 1995 as the Texas Tomorrow Fund, the Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan has been an important educational resource for many Texans, including my family.  On August 24, 2009, I received a letter, as did the thousands of other families regarding the Texas Prepaid Higher Education Tuition Board’s decision to change the refund rule for unused tuition hours when a contract with the fund is canceled or a refund is requested.

The board’s decision has triggered two possible options for all plan purchasers in Texas:

2009 Constitutional Election – don’t forget to vote!

We encourage all Texans to participate in the constitutional election of November 3. Early voting began today, with 11 propositions for voters to consider.

The propositions cover a range of issues, including curbing eminent domain abuse and controlling Texas’ property tax appraisal system. Other propositions fix errors that have crept into the constitution, allow for new debt, or provide the legislature with the authority to spend money.

Did you know you can fill out a “sample ballot” and take it with you when you go to vote.  Just make sure you take it with you when you depart your poll site.

If Obama Had Told Us Before His Election

If Barack Obama had campaigned on what he has actually done in his first 300 days in office, would he have been elected? That’s the question so many are asking today.

If Obama had told us he would appoint 34 Czars, reporting only to himself and not vetted or confirmed in the constitutional way, building a powerful unitary executive branch of government, would he have been elected? What if he had told us that his Green Jobs Czar had been a Communist, that the Science Czar wrote in a college textbook that compulsory “green abortions” are an acceptable way to control population growth, and that the Diversity Czar has spoken publicly of getting white media executives to “step down” in favor of minorities?

If Obama had told us he would take over the automobile industry faster than any socialist dictator ever nationalized an industry, fire the CEO of General Motors and replace him with a Democratic Party campaign contributor, would Obama have been elected? If Obama had campaigned on closing down thousands of profitable car dealers, nearly all Republicans, would we have believed that this vindictive financial retaliation against those who didn’t vote for Obama could happen in America?

When the Music Stopped

For those who are unaware, at any military theater, the National Anthem is played before every movie.

I recently attended a showing of ‘Superman 3′ here at LSA Anaconda.  We have a large auditorium we use for movies, as well as memorial services and other large gatherings.  As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through The National Anthem the music stopped.

Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States?  I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments; and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place.

A Blip in History

The word “blip” is defined as “a sudden temporary problem in the normal progress of something.” A single fire alarm blip may be simply a signal that the battery is low, or it could be an early warning that requires more attention, especially in the wee hours of the morning. Deep slumber weighted eyelids can cause that blip to be ignored, sometimes with tragic consequences.

On Tuesday, June 30th, 2009, such a blip showed as a “Time” news article, entitled “How Will Al Franken Make a Difference in the Senate?” This blip is one that should be considered a wake-up signal.

In short form, this blip would read “The Minnesota Supreme Court unanimously declared Al Franken the winner of the longest contest for U.S. Senate in the state’s history on June 30 . . . So at long last, Senate Democrats can celebrate the milestone they have dreamed of ever since the start of the last election campaign: a presumably filibuster-proof 60-vote majority in the U.S. Senate.”

How to Find Special Rights in the Constitution

In a July, 2005 “Meet the Press” interview, Senator Richard Durbin stated that he would have “no litmus test” for Judge John Roberts’ confirmation hearings. But, when Tim Russert asked how he would react if Roberts could find no “right to privacy”, in the Constitution, the Senator stated “I would have to vote against him.” This is another example of the shifting sands of liberal thought. This “bob and weave” strategy is exactly what saddled America with the abominable Roe.

Supreme Court Justice, Harry Blackmun, could not find  the right to privacy in the Constitution, either. In order to write his Roe v. Wade Majority Decision, he had to find it somewhere. Earlier, he had postulated that it could be found in the “penumbras and emanations” of the Bill of Rights.

Government-Run Business: Appropriate Role or Not?

The City of Weatherford operates (at least) two distinct businesses, although both are managed together: utilities and property management. Property management in this context refers specifically to 400-500 real estate holdings abutting Lake Weatherford, which are currently owned by city taxpayers and leased to the private sector for both residential and commercial purposes.
Some residents have been asking for a while now why the city council continues to maintain these functions under governmental auspices. Although a few of the vocal opponents of the current system tend to be dismissed out-of-hand by some, the topic nevertheless merited investigation. Should the city (or any governmental tier) be running businesses for profit? After asking questions of both sides, followed by the careful, considered application of rational thought and a healthy dose of the spirit of the U.S. Constitution, the result was one inescapable answer: No.
